USER PRIVACY

No effort is made to identify public users of this site. No identifying data is disclosed to any third party for any purpose. Data collected is used only for server administration, education and research.

As is typical, HTTP requests to this server are logged; this information includes the originating IP address or domain of a user agent requesting a URL, and the Referer and User-Agent information accompanied with an HTTP request. The specific identity of visitors is not logged. Occasionally log files are analyzed to determine which files are most requested and the previous site or user agent which prompted the request. The site serves a cookie (consisting of the requesting IP and a random number) which is used for the sole purpose of collecting statistics on new and returning site visitors.

Logged information is kept indefinitely as administrative and research material; it is not disclosed to third parties. Aggregate (completely non-identifying) statistics generated from these logs may be reported as part of research results.

The Forum is a bulletin board that provides an opportunity for site visitors to participate in an educational discussion. While visitors can anonymously read forum messages, a visitor must create a user account in order to post messages. A user may choose to reveal publicly as much or as little of his or her identity as they wish. A user’s identity is usually known to the site administrator (the instructor), and is necessary as part of the management the forum and for evaluating the performance of students registered for the course. Periodically, older forum messages are culled from the system.

The Forum uses cookies to store the following information: the last time you logged in, your login identification, and your preferred “topic view.” These cookies are stored on your browser. Cookies are not used to track your movement or perform any function other than to enhance your use of the message board. If your browser does not support cookies, or you have not enabled cookies on your browser, many of these time-saving features will not work properly and you will not be able to post new messages.
